The Ontario Rat-3 Utility 8662 is a solid survival knife and an alternative to the original Rat-3 model. The cleaver-shaped blade is made from 1075 carbon steel, which is strong and easy to sharpen. The extremely sustainable powder coating on the blade protects it from the increased corrosion sensitivity of the carbon steel. That is why we recommend you keep this knife dry and possibly slightly greasy. The wonderful properties of this steel guarantee a lifetime of enjoyment. The knife is enhanced with a micarta handle The handle feels slightly coarse which is great because it is comfortable to hold and offers enough grip. The RAT-3 is relatively modest in terms of size and therefore compact and manageable. It is great to always have a knife close when you go out in nature. A knife that is large enough to work with and is also compact enough to comfortably carry with you. The ergonomics of the handle are excellent. The handle is enhanced with a curve for your index finger. Your thumb rests comfortably on the spine of the blade. The ridges on the spine, called jimping, are in exactly the right place. They give you a better grip and more control over your knife. The back of the knife has a large hole for a lanyard. At the back of the handle, the steel sticks out a bit. You can use this part to perform light prying and striking work. It might not be a real glass breaker, but because it is so heavy this knife can break through a thick layer of glass. This Ontario RAT-3 comes with a solid nylon sheath. With the sheath you can always safely take the knife with you and it is MOLLE compatible.
